Michael Beitz and Matt Monroe have been collaborating for six years on large scale site specific sculpture-based installations.
Playfully referencing architecture, design, and sculpture, their work provokes a reconsideration of our relationship with the familiar. Most recently, Michael and Matt have been investigating the notion of “home” as an emotional and geographic destination, specifically the potential that exists to define ourselves through household products. The work is a reflection of the anxieties that grow out of the current entanglements of house and home as we begin to question both their value and permanence. Reconfiguring the language of established trade skills and materials related to residential furnishings and architecture, Michael and Matt create objects that are at once familiar, and at the same time challenge expectation.
Michael Beitz received a BFA in sculpture from Alfred University and an MFA from University at Buffalo. His work has been exhibited throughout the United States and he has been awarded several artist residencies including Sculpture space in Utica, NY and most recently the Roswell artist residency program in New Mexico.
Matt Monroe received a BA in Political Science from Colorado College and after working in both construction and design, he received an MFA in sculpture from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2006.
Matt and Michael met while working for NYC design firm BDDW fabricating high-end home furniture. The two have showed their work in New York, Philadelphia, Detroit, Buffalo, New Mexico, Colorado and Chicago and have upcoming shows in Los Angeles.
