June 26 - July 3: Ian Daniel
During my one week stay in the Flock House I plan to document the intimate life of the space, both the Smack Mellon gallery and the Flock House and their interaction/dependence on each other, addressing the interplay of Art and Architecture. Through writing and constant video recoding, I'm planning an ethnographic study that will document the detailed encounters, personal actions, interactions with the public and the evolution of the space as it's inhabited. On a larger scale, I plan to document the evolution of the space as it develops/changes with each artist resident over the six week exhibit in an attempt to understand and address how the Flock House "plugs-in" to Smack Mellon for its survival.
I also plan to use the space as an "idea studio," where I will spend time designing and rethinking the project I'm working on with Mary Mattingly called Air Ship Air City, for which the Flock House was initially designed. I will use this time in the Flock House prototype to prepare for its actual use on the Mex Building in Brooklyn later this summer. I will explore designer climates, storm simulation, air space, air rights, growing energy, utopias, radical living approaches, the addictive nature of city life and rethinking the way we use our limited space.
