Nutria NN (No Name, Nomen Nominandum) is the stage name of Christian Torres-Roje. Before debuting as Nutria NN in 2004, he studied philosophy in his native Santiago de Chile and was a member of the experimental trio Maestro. He has performed with many guest musicians and has collaborated on audio and video-art projects some of which have been shown in places as diverse as Witte de Witt (Holland), Adelaide Festival of Arts (Australia), Feria Arco (Spain), Moscow Biennale (Russia) and Chelsea Museum (USA). Other highlights include an appearance in the video ‘Homeless Lamp’ (directed by Chilean visual artist Iván Navarro and later acquired by the Saatchi Collection), a concert at the Park Avenue Armory for Creative Time’s Democracy in America: The National Campaign exhibition and also at Exit Art (NYC). He has independently released two CDs (Hueso Records, CD Baby). The music of Nutria NN is inspired by poets such as Pablo Neruda, Federico Garcia-Lorca and Walt Whitman and also by seminal Chilean singer songwriters Victor Jara and Violeta Parra. While the style can be described as Chilean folk rock, elements from various other music styles and cultures are interwoven. ‘Torres-Roje,’ wrote Roberta Smith of The New York Times, ‘gives an almost exquisite poignancy to the lyrics.
Enjoy the music of Nutria NN while catching a sneak preview of Smack Mellon’s two new solo shows, Blane De St Croix’s Broken Landscape and Carlos Motta’s The Good Life. In the main gallery space, De St Croix’s hundred foot long installation draws our attention to the physical landscape of the Mexico/US border. While in the back project room, Motta’s video installation focuses on the influence of the US and its foreign policy on the Latin American population.
