New York, NY—On Thursday, February 5 at 7 pm, ACME (American Contemporary Music Ensemble) and percussion quartet Line C3 will present a free, joint concert at Smack Mellon (92 Plymouth Street, DUMBO, Brooklyn) as part of the gallery’s Press Play First Thursdays concert series.

ACME cellist and artistic director Clarice Jensen will perform Trois Strophes sur le nom Sacher by Henri Dutilleux, followed by the ensemble in Michael Nyman’s String Quartet No. 2.  Line C3 will perform Thierry DeMey’s Table Music, Ryan Streber’s Cold Pastoral, and Toru Takemitsu’s Rain Tree.  The music has been chosen to compliment both the unique industrial, architectural space of the gallery – housed in the recently renovated Boiler Building – and the artwork on display.

ACME is dedicated to the outstanding performance of masterworks from the 20th and 21st centuries in programs that are both avant-garde and archetypal. The ensemble aims to present cutting edge contemporary literature by living composers alongside the “classics” of the contemporary. Since its founding in August 2004, ACME has performed works by John Adams, Louis Andriessen, John Cage, Elliott Carter, George Crumb, Jacob Druckman, Jefferson Friedman, Charles Ives, Donald Martino, Olivier Messiaen, Nico Muhly, Steve Reich, Terry Riley, Frederic Rzewski, Ryan Streber, Toru Takemitsu, Kevin Volans, Edgar Varese, Charles Wuorinen, Iannis Xenakis, and many more. ACME does not subscribe to one stylistic movement or genre; its concerts present all genres of contemporary literature in the same light and with the same conviction. ACME programs are created from a sonic and dramatic perspective with the audience’s live experience as the central motivating factor and inspiration. Core members include cellist Clarice Jensen, violinists Miranda Cuckson and Caleb Burhans, violist Nadia Sirota, flutist Alex Sopp, clarinetist Gilad Harel, pianist Eric Huebner, and percussionist Chris Thompson.

Line C3 is four percussionists – Haruka Fujii, John Ostrowski, Eric Poland (substituting for Sam Solomon), and Chris Thompson. The group was previously in residence at the Juilliard School’s Summer Percussion Seminar and presented multiple programs on a tour of Japan, including a feature at the Japan Percussion Festival in Tokyo. Line C3 has recorded Thompson’s score to the film Kali Ma, directed by Will Graham. The group is currently working on a multimedia recording project featuring the music of Nico Muhly, Ryan Streber, and Carl Schimmel, composers who have all written music for the group. Portions of these recordings have recently been featured on NPR’s All Things Considered, and will be released on Albany records in 2009.
