Artists will be present from 3-6pm
Other neighboring studios will be open as part ofDUMBO OPEN STUDIOS
On January 6th, during the deep freeze New York City experienced, a water pipe in the building next door froze and burst flooding Smack Mellon’s Studio Program space with two feet of water. Seven accomplished artists in residence suffered a significant loss of artwork and materials. Two Trees Management generously provided a temporary shared space for the artists to work at 20 Jay Street, while we worked to rebuild our space. The reconstruction has been completed and the artists were able to move back to the Smack Mellon studio space on April 6th. The flood and subsequent moves disrupted the artists’ workflow and made it difficult for them to produce new work. Because they lost artwork, materials and time, some have chosen to display their work as documentation. In addition to those losses, the flood was emotionally difficult and as a result some artists have chosen to participate in open studios and others have elected not to participate.
