Art Ready: Selected Work from the Artist Mentorship Program 2024

Opening Reception

Wed. May 22, 6-7PM

Press Release

This exhibition presents the artwork of students who participated in the 2023-2024 session of Art  Ready, Smack Mellon’s arts mentorship program for NYC public high school students interested in  pursuing a career in visual arts. This year, students worked with professional artists who specialize in  architecture, graphic design, painting, sculpture, ceramics, video and printmaking. The exhibition  showcases an impressive range of media such as figurative paintings and drawings, handmade zines and  art prints, videos, ceramic sculptures, and product designs, among others.

Art Ready engages young people in a way no other arts education program does—by pairing students directly with successful working artists. Mentors provide professional and creative guidance as the students make decisions about their futures in the arts. They tutor the students in their creative process, introduce them to new ways of working, and encourage critical reflection. Museum admission, mentor time, snacks, and subsidized transportation are all provided to students free of charge.

Coming from 17 high schools, this year’s Art Ready students include: A Bacchus, Pamela Bolanos, Chelsea Capellan, Danellis Carvajal, Arabella Casper, Camille Charlet, Valeriia Chernobaeva, Jaliesa Davis, Amy Dopewell, Lois Fosu, Evy (Boba) Hernandez, Janella Joseph, Min Jung, Taran Kilgour, Asa Kurtz, Eleonora Lazarieva, Mia Lew, Sandy Lin, Anastasiya Maizik, Dionne  Phillip, July Rodriguez, Gabriella Sepulveda, Alden Shultis, Charlie Vazquez, and Daria Viatkina.

This year’s professional Artist Mentors included: Craig Anthony Miller (CAM), Rebecca Shapass,  Megan Mi-Ai Lee, Phillip Shung, Max St.Pierre of Sage & Coombe Architects, Hua Chen and Derek Koch of Team Design Studio, and Isabella Wachsler of Lucky Risograph. Meet the 2023-24 Art Ready Mentors.
