Juan José Cielo

Artist Website

Juan José Cielo (b. 1996) is visual artist working in painting, photography and short films. Cielo was born in Medellín, Colombia, grew up in Miami and is based in New York. Cielo received his BFA from The Cooper Union in New York City and studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, France. His work has been exhibited at The Coral Springs Museum of Art, Piero Atchugarry Gallery, The Colombian Consulate New York, Alliançe Française Bogotá, Colombia, XVII Festival Internacional de la Imagen Manizales, Colombia with Hyphen-Hub, and The National Liberty Museum in Philadelphia. 

Cielo has participated in residencies with Fountainhead in Miami in partnership with YoungArts (2023), Piero Atchugarry gallery, Garzon, Uruguay (2023) and Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts, Ithaca, NY (July 2024). In 2017, Cielo was artist-in-residence with scientists at a full-scale Mars simulation program: the Mars Desert Research Station run by the Mars Society. MDRS is a full-scale analog facility in Utah simulating living on Mars that receives partial research funding from NASA. 

Cielo’s work has been featured on Univision, National Geographic Traveler magazine, RCN Television, RCN Radio, El Heraldo, VoyageMIA, and ARTnews. Cielo is the recipient of YoungArts’s $25,000 Jorge M. Pérez Award 2022.
