George Boorujy

Artist Website

George Boorujy was born and raised in New Jersey. Intending to pursue a career as a biologist, he somehow ended up with a BFA from the University of Miami in 1996. This gateway degree naturally led to an MFA from the School of Visual Arts in 2002. He lives on the far western tip of Long Island.

As much as we like to deny it, we are part of nature. Humans are animals functioning within an ecosystem, shaped by the demands of our environment as much as we shape it to fit ours. My work explores this relationship.

By depicting familiar animals plainly, and stripped of their expected contexts, I hope the viewer can see them anew. I want to show these animals for what they are, depicting in their physicality the evidence of the forces that have given them their form, their drive, and their success at survival.

Many of the other images are based on an imagined human society that has come and gone and is in the process of rebirth. They depict possible scenarios: buildings left to rot, areas of human habitation re-colonized by animals, and evidence of a new emerging culture.
