Isaac Soh Fujita Howell (b.1993, Princeton, New Jersey) lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. He received his BFA from Washington University in St. Louis and MFA from the Yale School of Art. Recent exhibitions include By order from above (and we are all dutiful citizens), at T293; Rome, A rabid dog has no choice but to bite, Public Gallery, London; and Durian On The Skin, François Ghebaly, Los Angeles. Howell has been the recipient of a number of awards and fellowships including the Harriet Hale Woolley Fellowship at the Fondation des États-Unis, Paris, and the Ellen Battel Stockel Fellowship at Yale Norfolk.
In his recent paintings, Howell has shifted from the sci-fi imagery of his earlier paintings, focusing more directly on ideas around individualism, self-formulation, and social estrangement. He has often referred to Henri Lefebvre’s analysis of modern capitalism in Critique of Everyday Life to think about these themes. He has been greatly influenced by science fiction and surrealist writers like Olaf Stapledon and Vladimir Sorokin, urbanists like Constant Nieuwenhuys and Yona Friedman, and grew up on Yu-gi-oh and Shin Megami Tensei. He considers his paintings as an amalgam of these varying influences.
