Nicole Awai is a multi media artist who lives and works in New York City.  Awai was an artist in residence at the Studio Museum in Harlem (2000) and an Arts and Industry artist in residence at the John Michael Kohler Center for Arts (2008). Awai has exhibited nationally and internationally in North America, Europe, the Caribbean and Asia. Awai’s work has been included in such seminal exhibitions as Prints and Processes at the Salvador Dali Museum in Florida (1999), Greater New York: New Art in New York Now at PS1/Moma  (2000), the Biennial of Ceramic in Contemporary Art in Albisola, Italy (2003), Open House (2004) and Infinite Island (2007-2008) at the Brooklyn Museum and the Busan Biennale in Korea (2008). Global Caraibes will open on June 12th, 2010 at MIAM in Sete, France.  In 2005 Awai was invited to speak about her work at the Whitney Museum of American Art as featured artist in the Initial Public Offerings series. Awai has been featured in such publications as the Nka, BOMB magazine, NY Arts, Review: Literature and Arts of the Americas, Small Axe, New York Times and the International Review of African American Art. In Fall 2010 Awai will have a one – person exhibition in the Project Room at Rush Arts and another exhibition at the Vilcek Foundation in the spring of 2011. Nicole Awai is currently a Visiting Critic at the Yale School of Art.

Initiatives in the advancement of globalization may not be solely about exclusion and categorization, the historical implication of identity and domination but the notion of identifying modes of consumption as well as re – coding of 20th century tropes from a 21st century perspective. I make visual kaiso (calypso – the misnomer) for this time.
