As an artist working in photography and video, my practice intersects the documentary, the narrative, and the performative. I am fascinated by ideas of ethnography, and my artwork engages themes around class and gender divides. My work has a strong biographical content and my images are created in collaboration with my subjects, ultimately revealing and playing with identity as a construction within the context of culture.
In my recent series, Casa de Mujeres, my mother plays the role of three women in one fictional Latin American home. These photographs can be read as portraits of my mother as her various selves–like a nested doll–and as images that reveal the conflict of vanity, race and class that live within one woman, and within one family.
My interests have led me to work with subjects in the United States and in Latin America, examining the overlapping history and development of the two cultures, mirroring my own experience growing up in a culturally mixed family.
