Smack Mellon is pleased to present Robert Hickman’s latest mosaic DMMDIA and Mónika Sziládi’s photographs Wide Receivers & Tight Ends. Both New York-based artists skillfully construct complex compositions that explore the shifting gap between perception and reality. Composed of 7,200 three-dimensional pyramid forms, all hand cut from mirror, Hickman’s 48-foot long mosaic glistens like retinal shrapnel–any movement activates serrated rows of angled mirrors into a razor-sharp kaleidoscope of reflections. In the back gallery, Sziládi explores the distorted boundaries between the contingent and the constructed as she digitally manipulates candid photographs to reflect the exhibitionist noise and privacy erosion of today’s technologically-enhanced social sphere.
This exhibition is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the City Council, New York City Council Member Stephen Levin, and the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature, and with generous support from The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and Smack Mellon’s Members.
