Brooklyn Poets Reading Series

Rickey Laurentiis, Jee Leong Koh, Mahogany L. Browne
Curated by Jason Koo, Brooklyn Poets

Recently named one of the best reading series in NYC as well as one of the 50 best free things to do in the city by Time Out New York, the Brooklyn Poets Reading Series takes place bimonthly at select venues in Brooklyn. Readings are free and open to the public.

Each reading features three poets, with at least one from Brooklyn. Brooklyn Poets takes pride in featuring emerging poets alongside more established poets, including those from underrepresented groups while maintaining a gender balance between readers year round.

Rickey Laurentiis is the author of Boy with Thorn, selected by Terrance Hayes for the 2014 Cave Canem Poetry Prize and forthcoming in the fall of 2015 from the University of Pittsburgh Press. He is the recipient of many honors, including a Ruth Lilly Fellowship from the Poetry Foundation and fellowships from the Civitella Ranieri Foundation in Italy and the National Endowment for the Arts. His poems appear in Poetry, the New Republic, New York Times, Kenyon Review and Boston Review, among other journals. Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, he currently resides in Brooklyn.

Jee Leong Koh is the author of four books of poems, including The Pillow Book, shortlisted for the Singapore Literature Prize. A new book of poems, Steep Tea, is forthcoming from Carcanet Press. Originally from Singapore, Jee now lives in New York City. The organizer of the inaugural Singapore Literature Festival in New York, he curates the arts website Singapore Poetry and the Second Saturdays Reading Series.

Mahogany L. Browne is the author of several books including #Dear Twitter: Love Letters Hashed Out Online, recommended by Small Press Distribution & About.com as one of the Best Poetry Books of 2010. She has released five LPs of her poetry and toured Germany, Amsterdam, England, Canada and recently Australia as 1/3 of the cultural arts exchange project Global Poetics. She is anticipating the release of several poetry collections in 2015: Smudge (Button Poetry), Redbone (Willow Books) and the anthology The Break Beat Poets: New American Poetry in the Age of Hip-Hop (Haymarket). An Urban Word NYC mentor, Brown is the publisher of Penmanship Books as well as Poetry Program Director and Friday Night Slam curator for the Nuyorican Poets Café.

Smack Mellon exhibiting artist Karin Guisti will read a poem to start off the evening.
