On September 2, 2010, curator/photographer Molly Surno will present her program Cinema 16 at Smack Mellon in Brooklyn, NY. For this installment of Cinema 16, a series of films based on the subversive, occult, and folklore, by some of the masters of 20th century experimental cinema will be screened alongside a live music performance of orginal scores composed by the innovative Ablehearts, accompanied by guistarist M. Beharie. This is a one night event and will not be repeated. Don’t miss this opportunity to experience a magical evening.

ABOUT ABLEHEARTS: Ablehearts is composed of the musician Thomas Arsenault, a member of the Shinkoyo Art Collective. He has recently worked with Mirror Mirror, Niobi, Aki Onda, Wish as well as dancers Rashaun Mitchell and Silas Riener of the Merce Cunningham Dance Co. Thomas will be joined by Michael Behaire. ABOUT CINEMA 16: In an era when film has been reduced to the tiny screens of our laptops and ipods, oftentimes viewed alone, Cinema 16 resurrects communal performance experience. Cinema 16 revives the silent film era in which live music would accompany black and white 16mm projections. Taking from the tradition of vaudeville, the performance is showcased at a variety of spaces. Each monthly screening modernizes the tradition of silent film by pairing contemporary musicians with vintage shorts.
Named after the New York-based avant-garde film society in 1947 and inspired by Maya Deren’s Greenwich Village exhibition of experimental films, Cinema 16 pairs edgy contemporary musical artists with silent films, curated by Molly Surno. The performances meld the worlds of art, film and music.
Postmodern and edgy these events give films a new identity by scoring live contemporary music. Surno has commissioned a wide range of musicians to interpret her short film programs. Cinema 16 has been featured in the New York Times, Time Out New York, Interview Magazine, Vice, among countless other publications.
