Cinema 16 recreates the experience of the silent film era, as curator Molly Surno programs obscure vintage films and pairs them with contemporary New York musicians. Bands are given one month to compose a musical score in order to modernize the tradition of live music accompanying films during the 1920s.
For this incarnation of Cinema 16, Lycaon Pictus will perform a live soundtrack to Pitor Kamler’s silent film Chronopolis and Joel Schlemowitz’s Bagatelle, using synthesizers, a bass guitar, drums, and other electronic and percussion instruments. Their soundtrack will be comprised of original music written for the film, combined with sections of free improvisation. The score will be a sonic exploration of Chronopolis’ themes of time, immortality, and boredom, as the band joins Kamler on his journey.
Lycaon Pictus is a synthesizer driven art-punk power trio made up of Aaron Diskin, John Christopher Morton, and Simon Marcus. Known for their incendiary live shows, Lycaon Pictus fuses together sensitive songs and electronic experimentation with a pounding post-punk rhythm section.
Aaron Diskin and Simon Marcus got their start with the New York art-rock group Challenge of the Future, which also featured Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. After the band dissolved, Aaron Diskin began a new project. He recruited John Christopher Morton, a DJ who had studied avant-garde music under Richard Teitelbaum and Benjamin Boretz, and had been performing electronic music at NYC’s SoundLab parties during the 90s and early 2000s. The product of this pairing was an avant-pop project using synthesizers and electronics to support Diskin’s soul-baring songs. Two years into the project, Diskin and Morton decided to invite former Challenge of the Future drummer Simon Marcus into the fold, shifting the group into a harder, louder, more danceable sound, while also opening up the door to more free improvisation and experimentation.
